Feedback

September 26, 2005

Tustin News Column Originally published 9/26/05: I was overjoyed to read a lengthy, well written opinion (”Letters” 9/15, Tustin News) to this paper in response to our recent columns about Old Town’s future. Overjoyed, because I happen to agree with many of the arguments set forth in the letter – satellite parking, trolleys etc. And equally happy because it officially confirms my readership has now doubled to two (my mother is a big fan).

The main thrust of the feedback was that instead of a new chain or anchor store to pull in foot (and automobile) traffic, what would make Old Town a true destination is an all-encompassing theme that would on its own strength draw locals and visitors to the area. Once here, people would then visit the shops and restaurants while experiencing the sights and sounds of the chosen theme. The example used in the letter was a small town in Michigan – coincidentally one I visited many times as a child growing up – where the businesses are exquisitely decorated for Christmas all year round.

It can be an effective tactic. This many years later I clearly remember my visits to the town of Frankenmuth and even some of the meals I enjoyed. Heck, the fact that I can still spell ‘Frankenmuth’ should tell you something.

Question to readers; would Old Town benefit from a recognizable, coherent, marketable theme? Or does the historic architecture and cozy, walkable, tree lined setting already qualify it as distinct from other Orange County commercial districts which could be further leveraged? Let us know what you think at www.tustinoldtown.org.

As always, see you on Main Street.
