Cup or Cone?
February 12, 2008
(Appended from a TOTA Tustin News Column from September 2005) After asking our readers what type of new businesses they’d prefer to see in Old Town, the verdict is in. Apparently when folks are strolling down El Camino Real, they want a stiff cup of joe followed by a double scoop of chocolate swirl with sprinkles on top. And they want to be able to do it at night - with all the other shops still open (presumably with laughter in the air and merriment all around…).
Our recent column that discussed Old Town’s commercial future generated quite a bit of email feedback. Unfortunately, the overwhelming sentiment seemed to be that there are very few real reasons to ‘hang out’ in Old Town after our good citizens have taken the trouble to drive down and do their business (buy a plant, antique etc.). For the majority of the readership that voiced an opinion, the pervading desire was to frequent either a coffee shop or an ice cream parlor. Furthermore, both should have sidewalk tables and be open until at least after the dinner hour.
Not unreasonable requests.
You can offer your counterpoint below. Does Old Town have a bleak future without any place to buy a $4 decaf?
It is good to note that both of these choices do offer a fine compliment to the existing feel of the area and wouldn’t be at odds with the ‘old’ in Old Town. They are also conducive to attracting a name brand anchor that folks could 411 or punch up in their car’s Nav system. Remember, the goal is to bring in ‘destination businesses’ that draw more people.
So what will it be, Seattle’s Best? Ben & Jerry’s? Drop us a note and let me know.
As always, see you on Main Street.

Got something to say?

When I look at a model of an Old Town that I want to hang out at, I look at Old Town Orange and how in recent years it has added a lot of dining options (including ice cream and coffee) and that it is a very desirable place to hang out at in the evening.
Having a coffee and ice cream option would definitely be a step in the right directions in regards to the introduction of a night life to the feel of Old Town Tustin.
