Tustin News Column originally published 10/4/2005: Flashback to the film LA Story starring Steve Martin. In one scene Martin’s character jumps in his car to visit his next door neighbor 30 feet away. As expected, feedback on our Just Park It column (Tustin News  8/24) was heavy. Not expected was the preponderance of email in favor of booting (or at least moving) the Farmers Market and turning that piece of dirt into another white-striped SUV farm. Read more

Tustin News Column Originally published 9/26/05: I was overjoyed to read a lengthy, well written opinion (”Letters” 9/15, Tustin News) to this paper in response to our recent columns about Old Town’s future. Overjoyed, because I happen to agree with many of the arguments set forth in the letter – satellite parking, trolleys etc. And equally happy because it officially confirms my readership has now doubled to two (my mother is a big fan). What Makes an Old Town?

I’ll address the question by abusing an old proverb – if a business opens in Old Town and no one is there to hear it, will it ever make a profit?

The answer of course is, “maybe”. But is a business owner looking for a place to set up shop going to take that bet? Especially with the (big box) Marketplace and (vital to the future) Legacy competing for his lease dollars? As an owner myself a couple of times over, I know I always look for as sure a bet as possible. So the real question is, can we offer that in Old Town? And if not, how do we change it?
